A story from Between Restless Jews and Weary Arabs
How can change come about if fear is so pervasive?
Fear of the security services, fear of foreign invasions and bombings, and religious fear. What kinds of men, women and children are being bred and shaped in the Arab world? Exhausted people. How can a society develop in fear? Not only do ideas not circulate outside the home, but they also do not circulate inside it, as men stifle any exchange. How can change come about?
Fear is deeply ingrained in our DNA, leading us to pass on our fear and compliance to our offspring.
Inexpressive and unconscious men. No life in their eyes, alongside black-cloaked, fearful women, almost scared to look at or speak to you. The stillness of statues is what we see in Arab countries, from Morocco to Iraq, through Egypt and Syria. The result of tyrannical forces. It is the face of people forcibly stripped of their natural dignity, who do not hold their destiny in their own hands.
Broken women raise broken children who become broken men. When families—those pillars of society—fall apart, nations inevitably fall apart too.
