A story from Between Restless Jews and Weary Arabs

Jews are the yeast of life

I had a Flemish half-Jewish friend in Kuwait named Lydiane. We were pretty close. She was the wife of a European ambassador there. As such, she toured the world and gained deep experience with people and life. Once I emailed her:

"Do you think what Israelis are inflicting on the Palestinians is just?"

"I feel the pain and suffering of the Palestinians very much.” She added:

“I deplore the parents of certain Jewish settlers who were persecuted and exterminated. These Jews, who had nowhere to go, were forced to seize Palestinian land. What a disgusting world. I won't regret leaving it." She continued:

"The answer I get from my father's Jewish family, whom I love, is:

‘The Jews made the earth fertile! Just look at what they have contributed to the world: Moses, Jesus, Karl Marx, Freud, and Einstein. Jews have always been the yeast of life. Let them have, in return for their exceptional contributions, this piece of land called Palestine.’ “They also remark: ‘If they were left on their own, do you think the Palestinians would have been better off than their Egyptian or Jordanian neighbours, most of whom do not have enough to eat? Many people envy Jews because they are rich, often without thinking about how they became so rich. People can’t or refuse to see the hard work!’

“These are no answers for me.” She added,

“I would like to tell you that when I am good and feel strong, I say that is my Jewish side, but when I am kind and generous, I say it is my international upbringing, thanks to my mother's side."
